I am passionate about a lot of things, but
My inspiration for cooking came at an early age, being inspired in my grandmother’s kitchen. I can remember entering MawMaw and PawPaw’s house, walking down the black and white tile floor into the kitchen. The smells of corn soup, bean soup, and chicken gumbo were incredible. As I think about this at this moment, it gives me chills just remembering the powerful aroma that would fill the house. It makes me think of….
…the feel of hot black ironed skillet cornbread, drizzled with Steen’s syrup, melting in your mouth.
…the taste of rice and gravy and chicken fricassee.
…the sight of blackberry tarts coming out of MawMaw’s “magic” oven, and of PawPaw barbequing (burning) chicken on the big black pit, wearing his apron and drinking a Miller Lite.
…and listening to the stories about MawMaw’s mother, Mom Mom’s homemade custard, corn maque choux, and homemade bread.
Each and every day I’m in the kitchen, I think of all of these wonderful memories and try to cook with the same “love” that was the main ingredient and the reason that my grandmother’s food always tasted so good!
I hope I can inspire you to spend more time appreciating and celebrating food, making memories in the kitchen, and enjoying life with food as the centerpiece.
